Update 4/20/13: Charlotte has been learning how to do burn-outs and binkies and is ready to go home with a loving family. Please contact us here at Friendly Farms if you are interested in adopting her.

Update 4/10/13: Charlotte was spayed last week and the vet also surgically removed a large stone from her bladder. She is able to keep herself clean now, though she still has more weight to shed before she can be considered trim.

Charlotte will be available for adoption through Friendly Farms once she is off of medications and given a clean bill of health by our vet. Contact us if you are interested in giving this little girl a loving forever home.

Charlotte is a lovely girl with gorgeous black eyeliner. She is very frightened because of all of the new sounds and smells at the shelter, and will show her true personality when she feels secure in a new home. She was very good for her clean up and nail trim today.

Charlotte is very overweight and unable to clean herself. It will take a few months on a proper rabbit diet to get her down to a good weight. In the meantime, she needs help keeping her bottom clean.

She is scheduled to be spayed on Thurs. April 4.

Charlotte is at Monterey County Animal Services. Contact us or the shelter to learn more about this sweet girl.
Update 4/10/13: Pepper and Stanley have gone to a new home! Thank you RabbitEARS for helping them find a loving family!

We think Stanley and Pepper are brothers, about 1 1/2 years old. Pepper is the more outgoing of the two. He runs to the front of the cage and enjoys having his ears rubbed, while Stanley takes more time getting to know you before he will accept pets.

Grass hay is the most important part of a guinea pig’s diet, and many people are surprised at just how much hay those little jaws can munch in a day! We feed about twice the size of each pig to them in hay everyday, in a large litterbox with Care Fresh in the bottom. They love to tunnel in the hay and get very excited at hay feeding time! Here are some tips for storing hay from Guinea Lynx. We use a plastic tote in the house to hold a couple of days worth of hay and then replenish as necessary from the bale stored in a weatherproof shed outside.

Stanley and Pepper were neutered on Jan. 17 and are ready to go to a loving home. Please contact us here at Friendly Farms for more information about adopting these delightful boys into your family.

Update: Ariel is now with Cavy World Guinea Pig Rescue in El Sobrante, CA. Please contact them for information about adopting this adorable girl.

Ariel is a gorgeous girl with lovely dark eyes. She runs up to see you when you approach her and will eagerly take treats from your hand. She is learning to enjoy being petted, but being picked up is still too scary for her!

Like most guinea pigs, Ariel enjoys hanging out with other piggies while you are off doing your human things- school, shopping, etc.- and then having some quality time with you when she has your full attention. Guinea pigs naturally live in herds of one male and one or more females, and a few dates will usually turn up a compatible friend for a lonely piggy.

Did you know that one of the most fun ways to socialize with your guinea pigs is in a pen big enough for you to sit with them while they run around? An exercise pen placed over a plastic tablecloth from the dollar store with an old sheet covering it to keep it from tearing from piggy nails, protects the floor and keeps your pigs from hiding under the furniture or getting lost in the stuff in the closet. A cardboard box or two with doors cut in them, a litter box with newspaper or litter in the bottom and a big pile of hay on top, and maybe a timothy tunnel makes a fun play land that you are part of! Exercise balls are dangerous for guinea pigs and should never be used.

Did you know that guinea pigs need to see exotics vets who are trained to understand their special anatomies and physiological needs? Be sure to have a good vet lined up before a problem arises. All of our adopters are given a card for an initial free vet exam at the Avian and Exotic Clinic of the Monterey Peninsula.

Update: Storm has been transferred to Cavy World Guinea Pig Rescue in El Sobrante, CA. Please contact them for information about adopting this adorable girl.

Storm is an inquisitive and friendly girl who loves to be part of whatever is going on. She prefers not to be picked up, but is pretty calm while being held and asks for lots of head scritches and ear rubs.

Like all guinea pigs, Storm needs a source of vitamin C everyday, because, like humans, guinea pigs do not manufacture their own. While vitamin C is added to guinea pig pellets, the best sources are in their daily salads of fresh leafy greens like cilantro, carrot tops, dandelion greens and romaine lettuce. A cherry tomato or chunk of bell pepper is a great addition for even more C, and a small piece of fruit like a mandarin orange piece or a couple of blueberries makes a nice healthy treat.

If you are interested in making Storm part of your family, please contact us here at Friendly Farms.

Update 1/21/13: Evan has a new family! Best wishes to everyone!

Handsome Evan was left behind when his family moved out of their rental unit. He came to us in a starter cage more suited to rats, with a bag of “gourmet” (i.e. “junk food”) kibble, so he is now on a healthy diet and exercise plan to trim up a bit.

Evan is a real lap piggy- he will sit with you and enjoys being stroked. He was neutered on November 1st and is very much looking forward to being able to meet some eligible single ladies soon. He will be safe to go home with a girlfriend after the 29th.

Update 2/1/13: Dear Sammy has been adopted! Thank you to Cynthia of North Star and Judy of RabbitEARS for helping him to find a sweet girlfriend and a loving family!

Adorable Sammy is sweet and a little shy. He will become a confident and happy pig when he has a secure and loving home. He is looking forward to meeting eligible girls. His neuter surgery was on October 18, and he is “girl-safe” as of November 15.

Sammy is still a little overweight. Muesli-mix type foods may look colorful and fun on the shelf at the pet store, but plain pellets such as Oxbow Essentials are the right food for your guinea pig. A healthy diet for a normal adult guinea pig each day consists of unlimited timothy hay, about 1/8 cup plain guinea pig timothy pellets, and a cup of vegetables, most of which should be leafy greens. A small bit of fruit or carrot makes a nice treat for pigs who are not overweight. Here is a nice guinea pig food pyramid guide.

Sammy thinks running laps is a lot of fun, and he looks forward to having a friend to play pig-train with.
